Every year it surprises me how people just don’t know that about the Jewish People’s Holiest Days of the year. They still think that Hanukah is because it is around their Christmas. Yet Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are such meaningful holidays. They are the Days of Awe and are not taught to Christians in schools, or churches, however, we are all taught about Christ’s birth wherever we go.
It is just difficult for me year after year to face people being unaware of how important this time of year is to me. When I worked at Caritas Peace Center, years ago and asked off a few hours early on the eve of Yom Kippur my supervisor refused to let me off yet, the eve of Christmas no one works. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year and we prepare for a meal before we go to a service and then fast for 24 hours.
This year, I mistaken made a doctors appointment and realized when it was and canceled it and I felt guilty canceling it. Now my part is I did not explain it but the doctors office should have known and said…”oh I understand it is a Jewish holiday.”
In states like New York and California, everyone knows. Why are we so behind in education on so many levels? It isn’t because we are stupid. So is it because we are ignorant? Or prejudice?
